MARIA del PICO TAYLOR
Pianist/Faculty Member
Maria del Pico Taylor, a native of Havana, Cuba, is a Professor
of Piano at Temple University in Philadelphia; Co-founder and Co-director
of the Philadelphia Piano Festival and Founder and Artistic Director of
Latin Fiesta Inc., an 8 member performing ensemble under the management
of Monica Robinson Ltd, New York. This ensemble is on the Artists
in Education Roster of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and recently
performed at the Academy of Music in a pre-concert encounter in collaboration
with the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Maria Taylor was the first Cuban pianist to receive the coveted
Canada Council Grant for advanced studies at the University of Toronto,
where she graduated with distinction with an Artist and Licentiate diploma
in Piano Performance. She also holds an MM degree from Northwestern
University.
Ms. Taylor is a devoted student of Dorothy Taubman and is a full-time
faculty member at the Dorothy Taubman Institute of Piano at Williams College,
Williamstown, MA. She has been working on the Taubman method since
the Institute's first seminar in New York in 1977, where she studied with
Ms. Edna Golandsky.
Professor Taylor is responsible for introducing the Taubman technique
to the Philadelphia audiences and is a frequent presenter of lectures and
master classes on the Taubman technique throughout the USA and has also
been a guest clinician in France, Poland, England and the Czech Republic.
In 1984 Maria Taylor was the winner of the Lindback Award for
excellence in teaching at Temple University and in 1994 she was selected
"Teacher of the Year" in the state of Pennsylvania by the Pennsylvania
Music Teachers Association (PMTA).
Her expertise in Spanish and Latin American Piano Music has won
her innumerable invitations to perform and present lecture-recitals both
nationally and internationally. Ms. Taylor has premiered several
Hispanic works in Philadelphia, including the Concerto Cubano by Paul Csonka
with the Temple University Symphony Orchestra and the Concertino for Piano,
Strings and Cymbals by Carlos Surinach with the Pennsylvania Pro Musica
Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Franklin Zimmerman and Rimas for
voice and piano by Roberto Sierra.
As a distinguished Latino artist she has been nominated for many awards
and was recently selected by the Iberoamerican Foundation as one of six
outstanding Hispanic Women in the City of Philadelphia for her contributions
to the promotion of Hispanic Music. Ms. Taylor's biography is listed
in the International Who's Who in Music and the International Who's Who
Among Women. In 1978 she was awarded a Notable American plaque in
recognition of past achievements and outstanding service to community,
state and nation.
